Jostaberry
These plants are live growing plants, not bareroot plants. They ship fully rooted or as cuttings. Plants are 10 – 20 inches tall and may be pruned to fit into a shipping box.
Jostaberry is a thornless 3 way cross between the black currant R. nigrum, the European gooseberry R. uva-crispa, and the American coastal black gooseberry R. divaricatum. The sweet-tart fruit is red-black, 3x the size of black currant, but smaller than the larger gooseberries. Fruit can be eaten raw or cooked and freezes well. It is rich in vitamin C. Will grow to 5 – 6 feet tall. Self fertile. Very cold hardy and productive once established. Berries ripen in mid summer. Plant in full sun to part shade(from hot west light). Easy to care for. USDA zones 3 – 8. In Warmer climates plant in shade.
Mulch with 2 – 3 inches of organic mulch. Prune annually to remove the oldest stems, and apply compost or balanced fertilizer in Spring.
Currants and Gooseberries can be an alternate host to white pine blister rust. So it may be illegal to ship to parts of DE, MA, MI, MT, NH, NJ, OH, RI, VA and all of NC, WV, and ME. If you live in these states check with your local/state agriculture department to see if they are legal to plant in your Zip Code and if you need a permit before you purchase. Go to nationalplantboard.org/laws-and-regulations/ for individual State contact information. We will not be responsible for plants confiscated by local authorities.
Plants come with detailed planting, growing and care instructions…and you can call or email if you have additional questions. Gil@ skipleyfarm.com
